Innovators are seeking new ways to reach customers, and now more than ever before, foodservice is investing in their fresh prepared offerings.

With increased pressure from retail establishments, many commercial restaurants have focused on convenience – offering order ahead and pay ahead options through websites, apps and third party delivery websites such as Grubhub.

Companies like Blue Apron and HelloFresh have built successful businesses around packaging ingredients and recipes for home delivery, capitalizing on consumer desire for fresh meals that are home cooked, yet fast and easy to prepare. Due to the positive response, several other companies have joined the market, many of which differentiate themselves by specializing in regional products, meals for specific dietary needs and healthier options.

While the variety of dining options, retail meal solutions and meal kits seems good for the foodservice industry, there are many supply chain challenges that might leave operators struggling to offer high quality food at a competitive price. Operators must take extra measures to educate themselves about crops, wage negotiations and distribution logistics and be creative in adjusting menus and offerings accordingly.
