Expanding Menu Options: The Breakfast Daypart

The breakfast daypart in the U.S. and Canada is seeing several trends that impact how the meal is viewed and what exactly “breakfast” means. 

 

Within the U.S., we are seeing a rise in crepe varieties with sugary and fruity toppings and creative presentations of new flavor applications for pancakes, waffles and French toast. Over a third of consumers indicate unique breakfast items are a must and operators are reacting by highlighting menu items that showcase their creativity.

Within the U.S., over a quarter of consumers (and 40% of older millennials) agree that they enjoy eating foods that are often associated with lunch or dinner for breakfast. This innovation will likely take the form of breakfast ramen, burgers, pizzas and more. For operators, these items are an easy and cost-efficient way to bolster breakfast menus, as many of these lunch and dinner items or their components are already on-hand in the kitchen.
