May is National Barbecue Month. 


Since summer is right around the corner, May is the perfect time to bring out the grill and get ready for a season of delicious BBQ! However, remind customers that pre-made BBQ sauces can be very high in sugar, and most contain high fructose corn syrup. Encourage them to carefully read food labels to find a brand that doesn’t contain high fructose corn syrup and is less processed. If you want to focus on some of the national days in May, get ready for:

5 - National Enchilada Day - Happy Cinco de Mayo! While traditional enchiladas are high in calories and fat, there are healthy alternatives that are so tasty customers won’t even be able to tell the difference. The key is using fresh, all natural, clean ingredients like chicken breast, black beans, corn, fresh salsa, low sodium taco seasoning, corn tortillas and avocado. Cheese is a staple in Mexican food, so remind customers to stick with the recommended serving size or use the low-fat variety.

15 - National Chocolate Chip Day - This dessert staple definitely deserves its own day of recognition. However, for those customers watching sugar and carb intake, they need an option to meet their dietary needs. The best bet is to opt for sugar-free chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips.

26 - National Blueberry Cheesecake Day - Fresh blueberries, combined with savory cheesecake, certainly makes for one delicious dessert! Greek yogurt can be incorporated to cut down on the amount of cream cheese used in the batter. Also, encourage customers to take note of when egg whites can be used in place of eggs, like in this recipe. This can be done many times when baking to cut down on calories.

30 - National Mint Julep Day - Dubbed the official drink of the “Greatest Two Minutes in Sports,” the Mint Julep is almost as popular at the Kentucky Derby as the horses themselves. To make it more health-friendly, simply remove the sugar that the traditional recipe calls for and use a sugar substitute instead. To take it one step further, remove the alcohol and replace with water and low-sugar lemonade for an even healthier option.
