Applicable for all age groups, sparkling water is bubbling up as one of the hottest trends to track this year, with new flavors emerging and more innovative varieties to appeal to varying palates. Sparkling water is a suggestion for responding to the healthy kids’ meal trend of 2018 and is also applicable for Baby Boomers seeking BFY options to limit their sugar intake.

Perhaps no one group has been more enamored by sparkling water than millennials, who view this bubbly beverage as a healthier alternative to soda and enjoy its clean-label properties, which consumers are paying more attention to this year.

Satisfying Vegan Demands for Dessert

Recent technological innovations have made it easier to manipulate plant-based ingredients, allowing the industry to surge forward in the quest to better accommodate vegan lifestyles, especially when it comes to dessert. Dairy-free offerings, especially those utilizing nut milks, yogurts made from fruits like bananas and plant-based creams and frostings, are pleasing vegan consumers across the country.

Modern consumers are turning to these traditionally vegan alternatives for several reasons, but perhaps most importantly, they are doing so to support optimal gut health. Fermented options like dark chocolate and even miso in ice cream are the types of plant-based, vegan-friendly options that are proving flavorful for ending one’s meal on a most healthy note.

Authenticity, Transparency Winning Over Gen Z

Research suggests that Generation Z (Gen Z) is more cognizant of what they put into their bodies, fueling what has been referred to as the “Reducetarian” movement. This means Gen Z is choosing natural, BFY options that limit harsh impact on our planet and people. In fact, over 30% of Gen Z confirms that they would pay more for healthier, sustainable products.

Words that Gen Z is responding particularly well to include “natural,” “organic” and “sustainable,” all of which speak to the way that Gen Z is searching for authentic, transparent dining experiences that make food a story with which they can easily connect.
