- 80% of consumers claim that having customizable foodservice options is an important factor in choosing an acute care facility. An additional 70% claim that having access to customizable options at work (build-your-own sandwiches or smoothies they could create on their own) is vital.
- 81% of patients have tried a new cuisine while at an acute care facility and nearly 90% of patients have a choice in what they eat at every meal. Coffee, hot chocolate, iced tea and milkshakes are currently among the top requested items.
- 85% of hospitals reported that they served more patient meals last year than in previous years, even though the number of hospitals is on the decline and stays are increasingly shorter. This year, breakfast is expected to be the best indicator of growth despite lunch sales still being hot.
What’s the Buzz
Serving healthy patient meals has recently taken on a new meaning in California. Launched early this year, “food is medicine” is a new pilot program aimed at keeping chronically ill individuals out of the hospital by providing them with two meals and a breakfast snack bag each day. Fresh fare tailored to the particular illness will be served. Although food is medicine has not yet partnered with hospitals, it is a goal and might well impact the industry in the coming years.
