By making formal prescriptions to their patients to “eat this, not that” more of specific foods, such as substituting blueberry and banana smoothies for breakfast instead of a sugary cereal, doctors are hoping to limit or reverse certain diseases such as Type 2 diabetes and hypertension.
California recently launched the Food is Medicine pilot program aimed at keeping chronically ill individuals out of the hospital. The $6 million project will be used over a three-year pilot project period supporting a Food Is Medicine Coalition of non-profit food and nutrition service providers. The funds will target chronically ill Medi-Cal patients who suffer from congestive heart failure, cancer, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or renal disease. The program is being funded by the state and provides patients with two medically-tailored meals and a breakfast snack bag each day. The goal is for Food is Medicine to partner with hospitals and impact the industry in the coming years.
