Unique Generational Demands: Generation X

Gen X Women tend to drive foodservice demands for their families. 

GENERATION X, those born between 1966 and 1976, are most likely to be involved in families with young children than other generations. They value convenient locations and kid-friendliness at both Full Service Restaurants (FSRs) and Limited Service Restaurants (LSRs). This aligns with their busy lifestyle of balancing work and family life. This age group seeks overall value from FSRs at the highest level of any generation.

According to Technomic’s Generational survey, Gen X women drive patronage to all restaurant types, as they are likely turning to foodservice to help balance their hectic schedules. Ingredient callouts are more likely to encourage purchases among Gen X women than men. Women cite health-consciousness as a reason for the demand.

Although not in the top-five attributes, Gen X is more likely to value ambiance than other generations and are also not too demanding of customization options. For this generation and their families, variety of menu options that span generations are important, as they are often dining out with kids and possibly their parents as well. Combo meals are appealing at LSRs, particularly to the young Gen Xers, due to the added value and convenience.

Fresh and clean foods may help spur purchases among this generation. Authentic flavors also resonate, perhaps related to Gen X’s increasing preference for several ethnic cuisines, particularly Mexican. For its Generational Consumer Trend Report, Technomic asked 372 people between the ages of 40 and 50 which types of cuisines they would order, and Mexican tops the list at 73%, followed closely by Thai food.
