Millennials consider overall value to be the most important attribute at both limited and full-service restaurants, indicating that they are looking beyond the price tag and are willing to pay a bit more for the overall experience, with a special emphasis on quality ingredients and service. Millennials are most likely to use technology to interact with foodservice and many of their purchasing decisions are driven by online reviews and social media. They also make up a significant portion of third-party delivery (e.g. Grubhub, Uber Eats, Door Dash) customers. As they start new families, kid-friendliness will become a stand-out attribute in dining decisions.
With this generation now firmly in the workforce, operators must adapt new offerings to Millennial preferences for new and innovative dishes, customization and technology solutions such as quick pay. As new parents, Millennials will be imparting more adventurous eating on their children, which will spill over into K-12 foodservice. Millennials emphasis on health translates to higher premiums for menu items that are “healthy.”
