Paddy & Scotts is a farmer-focused craft coffee brand. With their own coffee farm project, pioneering a revenue-based share model for farmers, and targeted social investment in coffee growing regions, they believe in a better way of doing business.
The coffee supply chain is long and complicated; full of people taking their cut of the farmer’s hard work. Paddy and Scotts had a bold idea to cut out these middlemen and corporations; to shorten the distance between the coffee grower and coffee drinker.
In 2016 Paddy & Scotts took on their very own coffee farm in Meru, Kenya. Working together with the Muchomba family they have created a unique project to revolutionise how coffee is traded and give more back to the families working hard to grow our coffee.
The Muchomba Farm is now the second home of Paddy & Scotts in Africa. Although trends come and go, Kenyan coffee is generally considered one of the finest coffees in the world. The farm is a little over 25 acres in size, consisting of approx 15,000 trees, with each coffee cherry being picked by hand between April and July. During harvest the farm employs dozens of local workers who pick and carry the cherries to the pulping station on the farm. The parchment is then washed and sun dried on long drying tables. When the processing is complete the beans are shipped straight to the United Kingdom for roasting. Members can visit the farm during harvest and even pick the coffee from their own tree.
In 2019, The ITC - International Trade Centre, a joint agency of the World Trade Organisation and the United Nations commissioned a 60-page report: “Better returns for East African coffee producers”. Paddy & Scott’s Muchomba Farm was highlighted by the ITC as:
“The entrepreneurial genius in this example was associating consumers directly with the source, inviting them to be partners, to be part of the story, to visit the farm and see first hand how their coffee is grown. The partnership has also financed the rehabilitation of a local school, a benefit to the whole community”
“The company invests heavily in the Muchomba farm’s infrastructure and agronomy to ensure that coffee is being used as a vehicle for social impact. Paddy & Scott’s are committed to pay above market price for their crop and enjoy an agreement that guarantees the coffee produced by George and his team will go to a good home”
Since 2006, they have increased their yield by at least 30%.
