Smithfield Foods, Inc. has announced the closure of three of their pork processing plants.
The Sioux Falls, SD processing plant closed April 13 and will remain closed until further notice. Smithfield has decided to take this action out of an abundance of caution for the 3,700 employees in Sioux Falls, a portion of whom have tested positive for COVID-19. The Sioux Falls facility produces fresh pork, bacon, deli meats, hot dogs and smoked meats.
Two more Smithfield facilities voluntarily closed on April 15 based on employee safety concerns: The Martin City, MO spiral ham plant (outside of Kansas City) and the bacon/dry sausage plant in Cudahy, WI. These additional closures are voluntary and are not related to, nor similar to, the Sioux Falls plant closure.
Smithfield stated that the closures will have little to no impact on current product availability and distribution. However, circumstances may be subject to change quickly due to the nature of this unprecedented pandemic situation.
Entegra’s Supply Management team is continuously working with all of our protein suppliers concerning the supply in relation to COVID-19. At this time, we are not anticipating any protein supply issues.
